The importance of common implementation: Microsoft Office Groove and Microsoft Office SharePoint (Microsoft Office SharePoint Server or Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services) are two solutions dedicated to collaboration and to the sharing of resources within a community of users.
Microsoft Office SharePoint is a “Web-based” solution (i.e. available as Web pages). As a result, consulting information merely requires a browser (referred to as a “thin client”), and can be done from different computers. Information is stored centrally on a computer (a “server”), housed within the business or with an outside hosting service. Access to Microsoft Office SharePoint sites requires continuous connection to the network (through the Internet or a corporate network)..
In comparison, Microsoft Office Groove functions as a classic Windows application (referred to as a “rich client”). The ergonomics are therefore identical to those of Windows or the Office software suite. As Microsoft Office Groove is based on a “hybrid point-to-point” architecture, information is encrypted and stored on each participant’s computer, then synchronized between the members of a workspace when necessary. This mode of operation lets you retain your information while offline, and without the necessity of a centralized server. Access to information while mobile—for instance when visiting clients or in transit, etc.—is then made easier.
